Manufacturing is a part of the foundation of South Carolina's economy. No other sector contributes more - whether it's tax revenue, job creation, high wages, or community support than the more than 5,000 manufacturing operations that are the economic backbone of our state.

Below are just a few facts...

  • The average salary for a manufacturing job is $54,444; the average salary for other jobs in the state of South Carolina is $40,797.
  • The manufacturing sector employs approximately 12% of all South Carolinians
  • There are more than 5,000 manufacturing businesses in our state. This represents only about 4.5% of all establishments in the state, the sector paid more than 20% of all wages paid in South Carolina.
  • Manufacturing's share of South Carolina's GSP (Gross State Product) is $24.9 billion. That's 20.9% of the state's entire GDP.
  • In 2005, South Carolina manufacturers exported $13.5 billion of the $13.9 billion in total goods; that's 97% of all exports.
  • Nearly 40% of South Carolina goods go to neighboring NAFTA countries.
  • Almost 25% of all manufacturing jobs in SC depend on exports for their jobs.
  • A total of 4,549 companies exported goods from South Carolina locations. Of those, 3,679 (80.9%), were small and medium-sized companies with fewer than 500 employees.
  • In 2008, foreign-controlled companies employed 60,700 workers in South Carolina, which accounts for over one-fifth (22.5%) of the total manufacturing employment in our state.
  • In 2008, South Carolina exported over $3.2 billion in goods to Canada, the state's largest exporting market.
